  • Nick Fritz: With Rick Spielman making the decisions, you just never know what’s going to happen. He has found crafty ways to bring in free agents, compile draft picks and make trades.

If this was yesterday, I would have said your best bet for a free agent signing is Michael Johnson. But as we now know, he went back to the Bengals, the place he played the best football of his career. The Vikings have just under 9 million remaining in cap space, so they’d be crazy not to make another move or two this offseason.

Also, with league-wide respect for Mike Zimmer and an exciting young quarterback under center, Minnesota is gaining much more interest from free agents than in recent years. That also plays into it.

However, the best franchises build through the draft because it costs far less money and teams can develop players to their liking. But make no mistake, if there is a running back, linebacker, safety, quarterback or offensive lineman that catches Spielman’s eye, I have no doubt he’ll make an offer. Outside of that, the Vikings are going to rely heavily on the draft to fill their positions of need.

Thomas, curious to know if you think the Wallace signing rules out a wide receiver in the first round, or if White, Cooper and Parker are still on your radar?

    More from Minnesota Vikings

Thomas Shefchik: Until Jennings was released, it seemed unlikely that Spielman would take a receiver with the 11th pick. Not impossible, but unlikely. Now that Jennings is gone though I feel like receiver is very much in play. I have been banging the DeVante Parker drum all off-season. At this point, if he or either of the other two top receivers are on the board at 11 I would be a little bit surprised if the Vikings passed and took someone at a different position. Like Nick said though, you really never do know with Spielman. I consider that a good thing. I feel like it is better for the Vikings if the other 31 teams are left guessing at what the Vikings might do next.

As far as why I still want Parker, I feel like he could be the piece that can take this offense to the next level. Lining up Wallace and Parker outside with either Jarius Wright or Cordarrelle Patterson in the slot could be lethal. Additionally, if the team makes Adrian Peterson hold to his contract, Teddy Bridgewater will suddenly have the keys to a very potent offense.

That said, I will not be upset if the Vikings take a linebacker, offensive lineman or cornerback Trae Waynes either. Pairing Waynes with Xavier Rhodes could leave the Vikings with one of the best cornerback tandems in the NFL for years. Outside of Seattle, few teams can pair two physical cornerbacks who are both over 6 feet tall and accomplished in coverage. If Waynes is still on the board that could be a possibility too good to pass up.

Honestly it might end up being a question that is impossible to get wrong. Either Mike Zimmer or Norv Turner should be getting a very valuable piece to add to his arsenal come May.

So in review, we like the Wallace signing, are not overly surprised by the Jennings release and think Rick Spielman will have a lot of interesting options to choose from with the eleventh overall pick.

It is never boring following the Minnesota Vikings, and there figures to be plenty more news coming around the bend. Stay tuned to Sporting Sota for all the updates.
