Minnesota Twins Need To Stay Away From Troy Tulowitzki

Don’t do it, Terry Ryan… and the Minnesota Twins’ ownership that would have to sign off on the potential deal. There are definitely deals to be done for the Twins, but any involving Troy Tulowitzki should not be touched by the franchise.

Tulowitzki is a really good baseball player, one of the best shortstops in the game, but there are also a lot of reasons to pass on him this trade deadline period.

First off, it’s no guarantee that the Minnesota Twins will be making the playoffs this season nonetheless go further than that. If the playoffs started today, the Twins would be the visiting team in the one-game Wild Card game, but that’s today. Tulowitzki would help the Twins get to the playoffs, but it’s not worth mortgaging the farm.

The talents of Tulowitzki would cost a lot. A good pair of prospects and a big leaguer like Trevor Plouffe or Kyle Gibson to throw out some reasonable names would be the minimum asking price.

The literal cost would be quite a bit too. Tulowitzki is signed through 2020 with a team option for 2021. Not including the team option season, Tulowitzki is owed $94 million. As much as I hate watching out for millionaire’s money, $94 million will affect anyone, no matter how rich you are.

The reliability of Tulowitzki is also a huge red flag. Tulowitzki is a great player when he is in the lineup, but the being in the lineup part is the tough part. Tulowitzki has been a full-time major league player since the 2007 and only in three seasons has the shortstop played in over 130 games. Tulowitzki has played in a little under 6.5 seasons worth of games, in 10 seasons of major league experience.

Throw in multiple young shortstop prospects that the Twins have singed the past two seasons, it really makes no sense to trade for the long time Colorado Rockies slugger.

In theory, adding Tulowitzki would be a great addition to the Twins, but there are too many red flags to go for it. Here’s the test, if you were given all of these reasons and the player’s name was Joe Blow instead of Troy Tulowitzki, no one would touch the deal.

Don’t do it. Just say no.
