Minnesota Twins shutout Astros in first meeting of season

The Minnesota Twins only notched three hits on Friday night, but they made them count and defeated the American League West leading Houston Astros by a score of 3-0 at Target Field.

Another day, another Eduardo homered for the Twins. This time Eduardo Nunez went deep for the Twins starting the scoring for the ballgame with a solo shot in the third. The next inning, Scott Kazmir, I hope you are sitting down, walked in a batter. Kazmir plunked right fielder Torii Hunter brining in the second run of the game for the Twins. Nunez was up next and nocked in another run, Nunez grounded out to second by Brian Dozier scampered home for the third run. That would conclude all of the night’s scoring.

Kazmir for the Astros went seven innings and struck out six Twins, but his offense didn’t give him anything after allowing three runs.  Kyle Gibson started the game for the Twins and went 5.2 innings with four punch outs. Four Twins relievers appeared, including Glen Perkins, but Perkins was not in for the save. Instead, Perkins pitched the seventh inning, Trevor May the eight and Kevin Jepsen the ninth.

Both Perkins and May struck out two in their inning of work. Jepsen got his ninth save of the year while allowing two hits a walk, but striking out two in his ninth inning.

The potent Twins had only three hits and they didn’t come from the usual suspects. Eduardo Escobar, Nunez and Shane Robison grabbed the hits.

Miguel Sano did not play, but he and Byron Buxton were being paraded around the Minnesota State Fair on Saturday morning, so there should be no concern about the rookie slugger.

Twins and Astros face off in game two of the series on Saturday night with a 6:10 first pitch from Target Field.

Next: Miguel Sano is strong!
