Minnesota Twins lose, two out with two left

Well, my friends, it’s all over. The Minnesota Twins were facing an uphill battle in their weekend series against the Kansas City Royals and the worst case scenario played itself out on Friday night with a Twins loss by a 3-1 score, Los Angeles Angels win and (an assumed at time of publication) Houston Astros win.

The loss puts the Twins two games back with two to play. That means that the Twins need to win the last two with the Astros losing the last two just to tie for the second American League Wild Card spot. Oh, and the Angels can only win one of their final two which would create a three-way tie.

Minnesota got out to an early lead with an Aaron Hicks RBI single in the second, but that’s the only run that the Twins could muster. The Twins could barely buy a hit after the second inning. The Twins had scoring chances early but couldn’t take advantage and many possible rallies late would soon be killed by hitting right into a double play.

Ervin Santana technically got the loss in the game, but pitched a heck of a game that he much more deserved to win than loss. Santana pitched into the eighth inning and allowed only two runs on four hits for the Royals. Glen Perkins came in to try and clean up, but had another tough time of it giving up a run while only notching one out.

Eric Hosmer hit into a grounder’s choice in the third to tie it for Kansas City. Ben Zobrist hit a deep double in the eighth off of Perkins to get the lead. Mike Moustakas followed with a single that scored Zobrsit after Torii Hunter couldn’t cleanly handle the ball in right.

The offense just wasn’t there for the Twins on Friday night which is a running commentary for the whole season. It’ll take a small miracle for the Twins to tie for the Wild Card Spot, so we just have to remember that the Twins shouldn’t have been this good this season and we should just be glad we got to October watching exciting baseball.
