Minnesota Vikings: Ex-Vikings QB Matt Cassel to start for Dallas Cowboys

It was a good day for an old friend of the Minnesota Vikings. It was announced on Tuesday that former Vikings QB Matt Cassel will now be the starter for the Dallas Cowboys until Tony Romo is back from injury.

Romo was injured in Week 2 and the Cowboys immediately traded for Cassel who was with the Buffalo Bills and sitting behind Tyrod Taylor on the depth chart. The coincidence is that now Taylor is now reportedly hurt in Buffalo.

The last three weeks the Cowboys have gone with Brandon Weeden as their starter. Weeden and the Cowboys have gone 0-3 in his three starts. This last week, the Cowboys lost to the New England Patriots and failed to score a touchdown for the first time since the 2011 season. With the loss, Weeden has now lost 11 consecutive starts.

Cassel is now ready to go for the Cowboys after getting more comfortable with the team’s playbook and will be the starter when the team returns from their bye this week. Cassel, of course, has a good amount of experience in being an NFL QB with his breakout year with the New England Patriots taking over for an injured Tom Brady, going to the Kansas City Chiefs and then taking over for a not-so-good Christian Ponder with the Minnesota Vikings.

ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that the Cowboys will have at least four games after the bye before Romo can return. Cassel has some good incentive to play a lot due to some incentives in his contact.

The Cowboys next game is on November 25 in the Meadowlands against the New York Giants. It looks like Cassel will face the Giants, home against the Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles and then at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at least. The Cowboys do not face the Vikings this season.
