Minnesota Timberwolves: Ricky Rubio likely to play on Sunday

It’s officially the Ricky Rubio comeback tour. Rubio returned to practice on Friday, as you read right here, he practiced again on Saturday and it looks like he’ll be playing in his first preseason game on Sunday night against the Memphis Grizzlies. Sorry, Wolves fans, the game is in Memphis, so unless you leave quick, you won’t be able to see this in person.

Interim head coach Sam Mitchell told Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune that if Rubio ‘feels good’ that the point guard will play. The Wolves officially have Rubio listed as probable for Sunday’s contest.

Better late than never for Rubio. Including Sunday’s contest, the Wolves only have three preseason contests left before the games that matter tipoff on October 28. The Wolves take on the Los Angeles Lakers in California to kick the season off with a nationally televised game on ESPN.

Rubio has been sitting out while trying to rest up and better his ankle and quad issues.

The return of the Spaniard gives the Wolves a fourth point guard to play with with Tyus Jones, Andre Miller and Lorenzo Brown already registering a good amount of minutes there this preseason. Interestingly enough, Mitchell also told the Star Tribune that he wants to get Zach LaVine some minutes at the point this preseason, too.

I’m just going to keep my opinion about LaVine at the point to myself at this particular moment.

Rubio’s return is exciting, because he is an exciting player. Many complain that Rubio can’t shoot, which is fairly true and fairly frustrating, but Rubio does simply make the Timberwolves a better basketball team. Plus, he’s one of the best passers in NBA history.
