It’s not the big time, really important Manager of the Year Award, but Minnesota Twins Manager Paul Molitor was named the American League Manager of the year by the Sporting News on Tuesday.

The Sporting News edition of the award is a big deal, but not as big of a deal as the one that is voted on by baseball writers across the nation. That award will be announced sometime this upcoming off-season after the World Series concludes.

The Twins went to Twitter to congratulate their skipper:

Molitor lead the Twins to an 83-79 record and came up just short of a Wild Card berth in his first season as manager as the Twins and the first season as a manager at the professional level. The Twins’ 83 wins were the best total from the team since 2010 and it was the first time the Twins didn’t finish in last or second to last in the American League Central since 2010 as well.

This is the fifth time a Twins manager has been named the American League Manager of the Year by the Sporting News. Sam Mele was named in 1965, Tom Kelly in 1991 and Ron Gardenhire in both 2004 and 2010 came before Moltior.

The Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) has only been voting on the Manager of the Year since 1983. Tom Kelly was given that award in 1991 and Ron Gardenhire in 2010. Bobby Cox and Tony La Russa have been given the award the most from the BBWAA both winning four times.
