Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder has been signed by the Denver Broncos for some quarterback depth.

The season is not going quite as planned for Peyton Manning this season. Manning had struggled all season and now is out for at least a couple more weeks with torn plantar fascia. That’s resulted in the Broncos starting Brock Osweiler, but still in search for some QB depth.

The Broncos found that depth on Wednesday in former Minnesota Vikings first round draft pick Christian Ponder. The team signed Ponder to be what would currently be there third quarterback behind Brock Osweiler and Trevor Siemian. Unknown at the moment is what would happen to Ponder if Manning does ever come back to the Broncos this season.

This is Ponder’s second AFC West team since leaving the Vikings this past offseason. Ponder signed with the Oakland Raiders in March, but couldn’t make the cut as a backup to Derek Carr. Ponder now sits just a couple injuries away from playing quarterback for a team that sees itself as a huge contender for the Super Bowl.

More from Minnesota Vikings

Ponder was selected by the Vikings in the 2011 Draft with the 12th overall pick and never found the expected success that is attached with the selection of a quarterback in the first round of the draft. In four seasons in Minnesota, ponder appeared in 38 games and started in 36. He threw 38 touchdowns compared to 36 interceptions.

Last season, Ponder only saw action with the Vikings after injuries to Matt Cassel and Teddy Bridgewater. Ponder appeared in two games and started one last season for the Vikings and was 22/44 for 222 yards with two picks and no touchdowns in the two games.
