Minnesota Timberwolves: Tyus Jones demoted to D-League

Minnesota native Tyus Jones has been demoted to the NBA’s D-League.

Tyus Jones had an incredible NCAA Tournament earlier this season and found himself stuck in a tough situation. Jones could have used more college seasoning at Duke, but his draft stock probably never would have been higher than after winning the NCAA title. Now Jones has been sent to the Development League.

The move is not a real shock. Over a month into the NBA season, Jones has only appeared in two games for the Timberwolves. Jones has played only 14 NBA minutes and has scored a point, grabbed one rebound, notched one steal and dished out one assist.

Jones will be heading to the Idaho Stampede, the D-League affiliate of the Utah Jazz. The Timberwolves not yet have their own D-League affiliate, something that puts the Wolves behind other NBA teams, but that conversation is for another day.

Jones was taken in the first round of the NBA Draft with the 24th pick overall. The pick was technically made by the Cleveland Cavaliers, but was made for the Minnesota Timberwolves in what was one of the most predictable draft day trades in Minnesota history.

The Wolves have team control over Jones four the next four seasons. Jones was signed to a four-year contract with team options for the third and fourth seasons.

The Apple Valley native has some potential to be a capable guard in the NBA, but was destined to not get a lot of playing time this season with the logjam of guards with the Wolves. Jones has been the fourth point guard option for Sam Mitchell behind Ricky Rubio, Zach LaVine and Andre Miller thus far in the 2015-2016 campaign.
