Minnesota Twins: Michael Cuddyer announces retirement

Longtime Minnesota Twins player Michael Cuddyer has announced his retirement from baseball.

He played every position for the Minnesota Twins except shortstop and catcher and now Michael Cuddyer is hanging up his baseball cleats. Cuddyer leaves baseball with over $12 million waiting from the New York Mets, but the injuries and grind have led Cuddyer to the decision.

Cuddyer announced the decision, the only way players due now apparently, via a post on The Players Tribune entitled ‘Play Hard and Dream Big’.

This past season, Cuddyer played for the New York Mets last season, buy didn’t have a season to Cuddyer’s standards. Cuddyer hit .259/.309/.391 with 10 home runs and 41 RBI while appearing in 117 games. While the Mets found success in the playoffs, advancing all the way to the World Series, Cuddyer struggled only getting one hit in 11 at-bats.

Cuddyer appeared in 11 seasons for the Minnesota Twins and appeared all over the field. At the end of Cuddyer’s career, he found a home mostly based in right field and first base. Cuddyer had 141 home runs and 580 RBI in his Twins career while hitting .272/.343/.451.

After 11 seasons with the Twins, Cuddyer played with the Colorado Rockies for three seasons and this last season with the Mets.

Cuddyer made two All-Star appearances: 2011 with the Twins and 2013 with the Rockies. 2013 also saw Cuddyer lead the National League in batting average at .331 and it also won him a Silver Slugger award.

The Twins selected Cuddyer with the ninth pick in 1997 amateur draft. Cuddyer retires at the age of 38.
