While the Minnesota Timberwolves are allegedly interested in the latest New York Knicks point guard, it looks like the Knicks are interested in the Timberwolves’ Ricky Rubio.

Just a couple months ago, the Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks were in heavy talks about, virtually, swapping point guards. The talks were happening as the NBA’s trade deadline was coming closer and closer. It has been reported that the deal was close to happening, but Tom Thibodeau didn’t bite and elected to keep Ricky Rubio on his squad.

The Knicks still reportedly want the Spaniard. ESPN is reporting that interest, but they do acknowledge that there’s a lot going on in the world of the Knicks. New York is also actively talking with the Portland Trailblazers in an attempt to get their draft pick for the upcoming draft, so Rubio might be a Plan B of sorts.

Either way, the concept of a Rubio trade to the Knicks is an interesting one. The main piece that Wolves were trying to get from the Knicks at the deadline was point guard Derrick Rose and he is now a free agent.

Obviously, the Wolves would not need a trade to get Rose now and it’s not evidently clear who on the Knicks that the Timberwolves want to bring over. On the other hand, if the Wolves do truly want Rose (which they shouldn’t) they probably will move Rubio somehow. The Wolves currently have three point guards on the roster with Rubio, Kris Dunn and Tyus Jones.

This is a rumor and probably shouldn’t be read into too terribly much. Plus let’s take a moment to analyze how wishy-wash this is. Just look at the ESPN headline for the story: “Sources: Some in Knicks’ front office would like to pursue trade for Ricky Rubio”.

The words ‘some’ and ‘would like’ are cautionary signs for us. I’m 100% sure that it is a true headline, but let’s also think about it this way: there’s probably someone in every NBA front office that would like to pursue a trade for Ricky Rubio. Rubio is super talented and distributes the ball better than most.

The rumor mill is starting to churn and the Wolves are tilling more water than usual.

Next: The Wolves need to stay away from Derrick Rose
