Antoine Winfield’s replacement?
The Minnesota Vikings re-signed free-agent cornerback Marcus Sherels on Monday, according to Rant Sports.
The Vikings tendered Sherels back in March as an exclusive rights free agent. Sherels will earn $555,000 on a one-year deal.
Sherels, 25, appeared in all 16 games as the team’s primary punt returner in 2012, but he played 78 snaps on defense, most of which was in the slot while replacing an injured Winfield.
Minnesota is highly expected to address the cornerback position in the draft or free agency, but until then, Sherels is penciled in as the primary slot corner.
Cap update
According to the NFL Players Union, the Vikings have 51 players under contract (including Sherels) and have $6.8 million in cap space.
