Will Joe Webb Be Wearing Purple In September?; Competition Surrounds Him

I would just like to start off this post by making a quick introduction. My name is Branden Lemke.  I’m 21 years old, and I was born and raised in Minnesota. I have written for several Minnesota Vikings websites including Vikings Gab, Vikings Territory, and Lemke’s Lot; a site that I ran a few years ago. I was also an “intern guy” at KFAN Radio for two years. I love interacting with my readers and getting their views on the topics I am writing about, so comments are encouraged! I’m very excited to be getting started here at Sporting Sota.

Joe Webb is one of the toughest players to evaluate in the entire NFL. The Vikings drafted Webb in 2010 to play wide receiver, but soon after switched him to quarterback, which was his college position. Webb had several opportunities in three years to show what he can do under center, but after the 24-10  playoff loss to Green Bay back in January, where frankly Webb looked like a high school quarterback, The Vikings decided quarterback was not the position fit for him in this league.

Webb will be competing with Stephen Burton, Rodney Smith, and several others for that 5th wide receiver spot. If by some miracle Greg Childs is ready for training camp as well after missing the entire 2012 season to a possible career threatening injury, this becomes a whole different story. So far it sounds like Webb and Burton are looking great in OTA’s, and according to http://www.vikings.com/news/article-1/Joe-Webb-On-The-Move-To-Wide-Receiver-I-Just-Go-With-The-Flow/0dab9e97-3020-404a-8c7a-cc53291103cb  Webb has been returning punts as well. I do think Webb has a legitimate shot to make the roster as a receiver, especially if he is seriously being considered for punt returner. It will be an interesting battle for the 5th wide receiver spot this preseason, but may the best man win.
