Counting Down to the New Vikings Stadium

At this time two years from now, the Minnesota Vikings will be on their bye week, awaiting their divisional playoff game the following week in their new stadium. It will be the first playoff game in the new stadium, in fact. They will be lead to this point by the steady hand of Head Coach Mike Zimmer and MVP candidate and starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

Hey, a guy can hope right?

The new stadium project recently passed a year since its groundbreaking. They have had webcams for the entire project from the exterior. A little over a week ago, the team announced that they have installed a camera on the interior as well, now that the inside of the building is beginning to take shape. The coolest part of the announcement is that they will be taking a time lapse video, starting when the camera was installed and running all the way through the end of the Vikings first regular season game in their new digs (which will hopefully be a win).

I understand why there was a lot of drama surrounding the project, and I understand why people find it hard to swallow public funds going towards a billionaire’s stadium. Still, I can’t wait. The Metrodome was a dump. Yes, it was our dump and I enjoyed watching games there, but it was outdated almost from the moment it opened and done on the cheap. I can assure you, neither of those things will be true about the new stadium.

The other cool thing is the major events that are coming back to Minnesota. Our state was never going to get another Super Bowl or Final Four without a new stadium, and now we are getting both. I am certain I will not attend unless my backyard sprouts a money tree, but the exposure and money that will come to Minnesota will be awesome.

Once it does open, it will be up to us, the fans, to make it our home. I’ve heard some worries about being priced out of the stadium, and losing the home field advantage, but there are always tickets available. If there weren’t, road team’s fans would not be able to travel as well as some of them do.

We still have another season in between, but our new, warm home is a nice thing to think about on this cold night.
