My Minnesota Sports Resolutions

I’m not always a good sports fan.

Allow me to clarify. I’m certainly not a fair-weather fan. I have spent my whole life watching the teams I root for fall short, over and over again, and yet, I am always back and full of hope the next season. So, I’m always “there”. That does not mean that I can’t improve my fandom.

New Year’s Eve is always a time of reflection and growth. With that in mind, I have thought about how I can better myself while watching my teams in 2015. Here are my resolutions:

  • No more yelling at the TV. As my mom and dad have been telling me since I was five years old, the referees can’t hear me through the screen. Yet, I still find myself shouting about bad calls and blown plays. It would not be so big of a deal, except that I know it makes it less fun for other people to watch with me, and that is the last thing that I want. There is nothing better about being a fan than getting together with friends and family, watching your favorite team win a big game. Staying excited about good plays but being more calm with the bad ones is something I aim to accomplish in 2015.
  • Go to more games. Living in Duluth makes it somewhat difficult to get to as many games as I would like. That said, it is not as if I live across the country. As sad as this sounds, I still have not watched Zach Parise and Ryan Suter in person. I have yet to watch Ricky Rubio in person either, although that is about to change. I will be in the house with my booing pants on when the Wolves take on Kevin Love and the Cavs late in January. I’m also always good for at least one Vikings game and a handful of UMD Bulldogs hockey games each year. Still, I’d like to see each of the major Minnesota teams in person at least once a year.
  • Wait until at least the All-Star break before I form a full opinion on the Twins. They have hovered around .500 after the first couple of months of the year each of the past two seasons. I allowed my hopes to rise, then they cratered both years. Baseball is a very, very long marathon. I will wait longer this coming year before deciding in full what my thoughts on them are.
  • Either use my NFL Sunday Ticket more, or cancel it next year.
  • Write more. I’ve really enjoyed my first couple of months here at Sporting Sota. Hopefully, Nick and I have been able to provide some thoughtful and enjoyable content. I plan on continuing to try to do so in the coming year.

Other than that, it should be business as usual for me. How about you?
