Greg Jennings Makes it Clear: Vikings Want Peterson Back

After Superbowl Sunday, it will officially be the offseason for the NFL. The Minnesota Vikings undoubtedly have a lot of work to do this time around. And some huge decisions to make.

However, one decision stands clear above the rest in prominence, as its implications affect almost every other decision the Vikings have to make: what to do with Adrian Peterson.

The public opinion amongst Vikings fans has been mostly on the side of bringing the 2012 MVP back at all costs. According to wide receiver Greg Jennings, the entirety of the Vikings organization shares the same opinion.

“I don’t know if he’ll be back. I can’t answer that question,” Jennings said. “But what I do know is that if he does come back, he’d be accepted with open arms. As an organization from the Wilfs on down, we all want him back. So, I mean, it’s a touchy subject and he’s been the franchise player — face of that team — for eight years. So it will be a loss, a huge loss, if we can’t get him back, and that’s the nature of this business.”

He’s right about the nature of this business. I mean what other business would even think about cutting their top performer? For the Vikings, that top performer comes with a cap hit of 15 million dollars. It puts them in an interesting situation, because they’ve got to find a way to cut that number down. On the open market, it is likely no team would pay him over 8 or 9 million. So there is room to work, if Peterson is willing to budge. If not, he will have to be cut. I really do not see the Vikings paying him in full.

We haven’t heard much of anything from Peterson’s end. In a December interview with ESPN, he noted there has been some animosity but also love from his current team, saying, “There’s people in the organization that I know hands down love me. I feel skeptical, of course, but that has been comforting.”

For the sake of the team, I hope he is back. There’s not a single move the Vikings could make this offseason that would make the team instantly better than renegotiating with Peterson. His presence in the backfield alone would make life easier for Teddy Bridgewater, the receiving core and the pass protectors.

If the fans want it, the team wants it and it would make the Vikings better, let’s hope they can make it happen.
