Effective Power Play and Penalty Kill
With so many games decided by a single goal, special teams are always imperative to success in the NHL. The Wild’s power play is ranked 26th in the 30 team league to this point, although that number is skewed quite a bit by the horrendous start to the season the team’s power play had. The penalty kill has been very strong. They have killed off power plays at a 85.0% clip, good for 5th in the league.
As we have discussed before, one of the main reasons for bringing in Thomas Vanek was his ability to score on the power play. Four of his 10 goals as well as eight of his 22 assists have come with the man advantage. If he can make those numbers climb it could greatly enhance the team’s chances of making the postseason. Of course Vanek is not the only player expected or needed to contribute on the power play but it is the area he can contribute the most.
