The complete story of this trade has not yet been written but what a phenomenal first chapter. Dubnyk spent his first part of the 2014-15 season backing up Mike Smith, although he largely outplayed him when given an opportunity this season. The previous season saw him bouncing around from team to team. He largely credits his renaissance to former NHL netminder Sean Burke for working with him leading up to this season, as Greg Wyshynski of Yahoo’s Puck Daddy explained in February.
Whatever the reason may be, he has been phenomenal for the Wild, saving their season in the process. We have gone over the horrendous goaltending the Wild received before his arrival and don’t need to do so again. The Wild just need to hope he can hold up and continue his stellar play for the rest of the regular season and through the playoffs. Of course the Wild have to make it there first. Dubnyk is a free agent after this year but I can’t imagine the Wild letting him walk at this point. Hopefully the good play and good times continue.
