Minnesota Twins Send Down Kennys Vargas, But Who’s Coming Up?

Remember a couple weeks ago when we all got excited about Byron Buxton being called up to the major leagues and we all made sure we were watching the Minnesota Twins on our televisions on a perfectly nice Sunday? Well, that kind of thing might be happening again Friday.

After the loss today, that’s becoming a more commonplace phrase as we move along this season, the Twins sent DH/1B Kennys Vargas to Double-A. Seriously, not Triple-A Rochester Red Wings, but all the way back to Double-A Chattanooga, Tennessee to go hangout with Doug Mientkiewicz.

It’s not good to see Vargas struggling, but the end of the tweet from MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger is what has everybody talking and people like to talk. That corresponding move could be a pretty big deal.

Oswaldo Arcia would be the very boring option. We’ve seen him at the major league level a lot already and he isn’t exactly tearing it up down in the minors currently.

The popular opinion or want is Miguel Sano. Sano is the second part of the 1-2 punch that Twins fans have been waiting for. In 66 games this year, Sano has 15 home runs, 48 RBI and is hitting .274/.374/.544 with an OPS of .918.

Max Kepler might just be the guy, though. The Twins currently have a hole in centerfield that Kepler would fill, plus he is tearing up Double-A currently batting .346/.417/.556 with an OPS of .973. Kepler has driven in 32 with three home runs, eight triples and 20 doubles in 58 games at Chattanooga.

Whomever is being called up should be ready to go tomorrow night in Kansas City with a 7:10 first pitch. I looked to make sure on the pocket schedule with Arcia on the cover… bad marketing choice.

And knowing the Twins, it won’t be any of the three. Welcome back, Doug Bernier!
