Minnesota Twins Place Phil Hughes On Disabled List

This might explain some things, but it does complicate things for the Minnesota Twins and their starting rotation. Last year’s stud muffin Phil Hughes will be heading to the 15-day disabled list after his bullpen session this week didn’t go well. An MRI shows inflammation in Hughes’ back and the pitcher will also receive a cortisone shot. The placement on the DL is retroactive to the 10th.

Hughes going down changes up the Twins’ rotation for the whole weekend series coming up against the Cleveland Indians.

Friday’s start will go to Trevor May who has recently been pitching out of the bullpen after being in the rotation. May won’t be able to throw the regular amount of 100 pitches that starters are usually expected to since he is no longer stretched out as a starter. May is expected to at least make two starts.

Saturday goes to Tyler Duffey who made a start in the Twins horrible series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Duffey gave up six runs in only two innings in his first major league appearance, so the Twins hope it works better in round two.

Sunday will mark the return of Tommy Milone who has been on the DL for the Twins and will be activated in time to make the start. Milone has made 14 starts for the Twins this season with a 3.76 ERA and a 1.279 WHIP.

The bigger headline might be that the Twins again needed a starter from the minor leagues and again decided against calling up hot top prospect Jose Berrios. The Twins subscribe to the theory that once they call a prospect up that they don’t want to send them back down and that might be affecting Berrios right now. I think that’s a lame excuse especially with a team that has a rotation with a guy the team might end up flip-flopping from the rotation to the bullpen for the rest of the season, but that’s just me.
