Minnesota Twins: Comeback comes up short, Twins fall to Detroit

facebooktwitterreddit

The Minnesota Twins made a valiant comeback on Tuesday night, but the comeback wasn’t big enough as the Twins fell to the Detroit Tigers by a score of 5-4. The game saw the comeback also of Phil Hughes, but Hughes didn’t last too long on the mound for Minnesota.

Hughes lasted three innings for the Twins giving up three runs on six hits in a 65 pitch outing. All the runs Hughes gave up were via the RBI single, surrendering two in the first inning and one in the second inning.

The very odd thing about the ballgame is that every run before the ninth inning was scored via an RBI single. Kurt Suzuki got the Twins on the board in the second with one to make it 3-1. In the seventh, Miguel Sano hit one that scored two to cut the lead to 4-3.

A sac fly in the top of the ninth gave the Tigers the insurance run that they needed, because in the bottom half of the inning Joe Mauer hit an RBI double that scored Brian Dozier, but that was all the Twins could muster. Miguel Sano was the winning run with two outs after Mauer, but struck out swinging to end the game.

The Twins did muster 10 hits in the game, but no one really stood out at the plate. Aaron Hicks and Byron Buxton were the only Twins to get multiple hits, both with two. Leaving nine men on base didn’t help the cause for the Twins either.

The final game of the series is set for Wednesday at 7:10 from Target Field. The Twins are now 1.5 games back in the race for the second Wild Card spot. The Twins are now chasing the Houston Astros who flipped positions in the AL West after they were defeated by the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night.
