Minnesota Golden Gophers win battle with LA-Monroe
In a busy afternoon of Minnesota sports, the first game was a victory from the campus of the University of Minnesota. The Golden Gophers men’s basketball team was in action for their second regular season game and defeated University of Louisiana – Monroe by a score of 67-56.
The Gophers looked fairly good in the first half. Minnesota showed great ball movement and were quick going up and down the court. The home tried to keep that going in the second half, but the Golden Gophers became ice cold from the floor.
Minnesota scored 38 points in the first half, but the struggle on the second half only saw 29 points scored for the Gophers. LA-Monroe outscored the Gophers in the second half of the game by two points with the Warhawks actually taking the lead for a spell. The Gophers responded with an 11-point run to seal the game.
While there were some exciting things to take away from the Gophers’ victory, the major concern was the turnover amount. The Gophers turned the ball over 12 times in the contest and the major savior was LA-Monroe’s 17 turnovers to match.
For the second straight game, senior Joey King was the leader for the Gophers. King scored 20 points, following a 22 point performance on Friday, and grabbed six rebounds. Nate Mason had some nice plays in the game for 12 points. Kevin Dorsey provided 11 points of the bench for Richard Pitino’s squad.
