North Dakota adopts new Fighting Hawks nickname
The fight has been going for years and we finally have a solution to the University of North Dakota’s nickname problem. The University announced on Wednesday their new nickname will be the Fighting Hawks.
UND dropped their original Fighting Sioux nickname due to demands from the NCAA in 2012 due to the nickname being offensive to Native Americans and have been without a nickname sense.
According to the Star Tribune, the election process to get a brand new nickname has cost the University of North Dakota over $200,000 to come to Fighting Hawks. The price tag is pretty high for something that seemingly could have been done with a simple online poll that could be password protected and only accessible to the folks who were supposed to vote, but that’s just my thought. I’m not at the liberty to spend a university’s money like it’s going out of style, but it sure looks like a fun gig!

The next step is for a new logo. The school will now be accepting bids from firms to design the new Fighting Hawks logo. Athletic Director Brian Faison said that the logo decision should be made by the summer so the logo should appear on most UND uniforms for the 2016-2017 season, but some teams have already ordered next season’s uniforms so they will have to wait until the 2017-2018 season.
The Fighting Sioux logos on display throughout Ralph Engelstad Arena will remain as part of an agreement with the NCAA. That is where the UND hockey squads take to the ice.
