Over the weekend, the 24th seed Minnesota Timberwolves advanced to the Summer League Championship on the back of second year point guard Tyus Jones.

Apple Valley native Tyus Jones has put the Minnesota Timberwolves team on his back since rookie guard Kris Dunn was lost to a concussion. With a shooting line of .457/.444/.851, Jones has been the leader the young Timberwolves Summer League roster needed. Averaging 4 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 1.3 steals, and 19.4 points per game, Jones was the star to watch on this team over the weekend.

Entering the single elimination tournament, the Minnesota Timberwolves were the 24th seed after losing 3 games in a row. They rallied around Jones to win three close games against Memphis, Toronto, and Phoenix. Now they will play the Chicago Bulls in the Samsung Summer League Finals.

Yesterday, Tyus Jones was crowned the Samsung Summer League Most Valuable Player. This is a huge honor for the young second year point guard. He has shown a lot of growth since being drafted out of Duke.

Jones has shown that he has the ability to lead and put a team on his back in crunch time. Back to his college days when Jones lead the Duke Blue Devils to the National Championship and became the NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, to now showing that same poise in the Summer League.

With new Head Coach Tom Thibodeau watching from the stands, surely he should be excited to work with Jones. Thibodeau has been known for getting wonders out of his backup point guards. Jones will be a nice punch for the Timberwolves second unit as he develops.

We must remember that Jones is still growing into his body. He is no where near his prime. As he continues to grow and learn the new Thibodeau ran system, Jones should be able to thrive as a backup guard on the Timberwolves second unit.
