Minnesota Twins: Brian Dozier to set MLB Record for Second Baseman
By Ryan Palmer
In a season Minnesota Twins fans would like to forget, there has been one bright spot. Brian Dozier is on pace to set the MLB record for home runs in a single season by a second baseman.
Brian Dozier already holds the American League record for home runs in a single season by a second baseman. As of Thursday, Dozier is sitting at 41 dingers for the year.
Dozier was the first second baseman since Ryne Sandberg (Chicago Cubs) to hit at least 40 in a season since 1990. So just how far does he have to go to set the Major League mark?
Rogers Hornsby and Davey Johnson are the current record holders at 42. Brian Dozier currently hits a home run about every 13.5 times he steps up to the plate. With 21 games left in the regular season, Dozier is sure to tie, if not break the current mark.
Fans that would like to see Dozier make history at Target Field will have their opportunity starting September 20th, when the Twins host the Detroit Tigers for a three game homestand. If Brian fails to knock one out of the park against the Tigers, don’t fret, as the Seattle Mariners roll into Minneapolis on the 23rd.
Harmon Killebrew holds the single season record for a Minnesota Twin at any position with 49. Killebrew set this record twice, once in 1964, and again in 1969. Brian Dozier however has been the first Minnesota Twin to hit at least 40 homers since 1970.

Forty-six years have passed since any Minnesota Twin has hit forty. Think about that for a moment. With names like Kent Hrbek, David Ortiz, Rod Carew, Tony Oliva, Kirby Puckett, Tom Brunansky, Shane Mack, and Gary Gaetti. Not a single Minnesota Twin has accomplished this mark in almost five decades, crazy.
Crazy until Brain Dozier came along. Chances are slim that Dozier will catch Killebrew’s mark, but he will still get his name in the record books.
