SportingSota’s Monday Update: News and Headlines from the Weekend
By Ryan Palmer
Get caught up with all of your favorite Minnesota sport’s teams. The latest news and headlines, all in one place.
It was a mostly cloudy weekend for anyone who follows the local teams. With the Minnesota Vikings yet to take the field, here is the latest from around the Twin Cities.
Oh, and did you know Minnesota still has a professional baseball team?
Minnesota Twins
The good news, Minnesota received the No. 1 overall pick in 2017. The bad news, everything else in 2016. The Twin’s ended their season this weekend with a record of 59-103, but at least Brian Dozier is returning. Minnesota has a lot of work to keep them busy this off-season. From replacing Terry Ryan, to building a competitive roster, Twin’s management will be busy.
Minnesota Lynx
The defending champion Minnesota Lynx swept the Phoenix Mercury to advance to the WNBA Finals, where they await the winner of the Chicago-Los Angeles series. Maya Moore had a game high 20 points to lead the three-game knockout. If the Lynx can win another title, it would be their fifth in six years, not too shabby.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The wolfies said goodbye to a legend. Kevin Garnett retired at the age of forty, all of Minnesota will miss “the big ticket.” The Timberwolves are into their opening week of training camp under new coach Tom Thibodeau. Intensity, and a whole lot of sweat should be flying around the court in preparation for a monster season.

Tracy Claeys Big 10 debut did not go as planned. The Gopher’s battled Penn State in rough weather conditions at Beaver Stadium in University Park. One of the big headlines from the Gopher’s 29-26 loss was Jaylen Water’s big hit on PSU’s kicker Joey Julius. Shannon Brook’s had over 100 yards of rushing on 14 carries. Emmit Carpenter gave the maroon and gold a 26-23 OT lead, but PSU QB Trace McSorley ended it for the Nittany Lions with a long scramble for a TD.
