Two Minnesota Vikings CB’s Rank in Top 10
By Ryan Palmer
Two Minnesota Vikings have made Ike Taylor’s list of Top 10 corner’s heading into Week 8. ‘Ike’s Island’ is a weekly feature on NFL.com.
The Minnesota Vikings defense has been getting noticed in 2016. With a unit that ranks fourth against the pass overall, Viking’ corners were bound to get some attention.
Both Terence Newman and Xavier Rhodes landed a spot this week, with Newman actually being featured.
Here is Taylor’s Top 10
- Patrick Peterson, Arizona Cardinals
- Josh Norman, Washington Redskins
- Richard Sherman, Seattle Seahawks
- Adam Jones, Cincinnati Bengals
- Aqib Talib, Denver Broncos
- Marcus Peters, Kansas City Chiefs
- Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, New York Giants
- Terence Newman, Minnesota Vikings
- Chris Harris Jr., Denver Broncos
- Xavier Rhodes, Minnesota Vikings
Ike Taylor had this to say about Newman:
"Newman is savvy and understands offenses very well. The rangy corner’s playing style is similar to Kansas City sophomore Marcus Peters. Though they are on opposite ends of the spectrum in age, they both like to play off the line of scrimmage, see the entire field and react off their instincts.Through Week 7, Newman has allowed just 15 receptions on 38 targets (39.5 percent) for 130 yards (8.7 yards per catch). He has five passes defensed and one interception –off the 2015 league MVP Cam Newton in Week 3– while not giving up a touchdown in six games. Opposing quarterbacks have a 38.3 passer rating when targeting Newman this season."
For Newman, age is but a number. His time-defying play should be getting more attention. Call it proper scheme or situational play, either way Newman is keeping up with the best athletes in the world. Just how much Newman has left in the tank is still to be determined. In the meantime let’s just enjoy a master performing his craft.

Xavier Rhodes is the premier corner, on a very talented unit. Rhodes always draws the opponents best receiver, and shuts them down. He is still signed under his rookie deal through 2017, upon expiration Xavier will ‘get paid,’ as the kid’s say.
Look for the Minnesota Vikings to lock-him-up before he can hit the free agent market. Rhodes will be the best corner available, and the Vikings don’t want to get into a bidding war. Viking’ legend Antoine Winfield was picked up when the Buffalo Bills foolishly let him loose. Rick Spielman will not make that same mistake.
