After falling short of everyone’s expectations after a big rookie season, Cordarrelle Patterson was a question mark coming into this season. He is working to get paid and it is showing.

Cordarrelle Patterson is one of the most athletic players in the NFL. Coming out of college, where you can rely on your athleticism alone, Patterson was touted as a top prospect. He was even selected before Texans breakout star DeAndre Hopkins.

After his rookie season, the bar was set very high for Patterson. Patterson posted 469 receiving yards, 158 rushing yards, 1393 return yards, and a total of 9 touchdowns. He showed explosive, one cut speed that made him a threat with the ball in his hands.

Unfortunately over the next two seasons, Patterson’s opportunities came less and less. In 2015, he was targeted just twice. He seemed to be in the coaching staff’s “dog house.” Word was that Patterson was not putting in the work it took to become a top NFL wide receiver. There was also rumors that he could not get a grasp of the playbook, especially where he should be during his routes.

This offseason, like the few before that, we heard that Patterson was really working hard at his craft in an attempt to be a key contributor on this team. This offseason, other rookies from his draft class like Xavier Rhodes and Sharrif Floyd had their fifth year options picked up. Patterson did not.

This could have lit a fire under Patterson. He knew that he was working this year for a contract with the Vikings, or auditioning for a new team. At the time, with the production we had seen from Patterson, it looked like the smart move not to pick up his option.

Now, with him playing well, could he end up on another team who offers him a larger contract? He is a locker room favorite in Minnesota and has shown that he will do whatever it takes to help this team win.

Contributing as a wide receiver, kick off returner, as well as the gunner on the punt coverage team, which he has done an amazing job at. In Sundays game against Arizona, Patterson showed that he can still make one cut and break off for a kickoff return touchdown.

Patterson has really proved most wrong, showing that he had put in the hard work to help this team win.

Hopefully Cordarrelle Patterson will be a Minnesota Vikings next year, as I could see him being a nice piece for a while.
