The Minnesota Timberwolves have a lot of young talent on their roster right now, but hopes were that the team could somehow sneak into the top three of the NBA Draft via the lottery on Tuesday night. The four-digit ping-pong ball combination did not fall in the way of the Timberwolves.

The Boston Celtics were handed the first overall pick of the NBA Draft. Yes, the Celtics that are currently in the Eastern Conference Finals and were the best team in the Eastern Conference in the regular seaso will be getting even better with the top pick. Boston receives the pick via a trade with the Brooklyn Nets.

The second overall pick went to the Magic Johnson lead Los Angeles Lakes and third place was given to the perpetually rebuilding Philadelphia 76ers.

The last time the Timberwolves made the playoffs was the 2003-2004 season, so the

Timberwolves are quite familiar with picking in the lottery portion of the NBA Draft. This is the fifth straight draft for the Wolves in the lottery and the 12th time in the last 13 years for the franchise.

Speculation was arising before the NBA Draft Lottery about what the Wolves will do with the pick. Some are speculating that Tom Thibodeau will trade the pick to get veteran help with the very young nucleus of Karl-Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine.

The jury is out on Thibodeau in Minnesota. Thibodeau has been the head man in charge in Minnesota for over a year and one full season that saw the Wolves not make great strides towards the playoffs and didn’t see much out of last season’s lottery pick Kris Dunn.

Granted, it is only one year in to the Thibodeau reign, but disappointments have already arisen. Thibodeau’s first season in Minnesota was the first and only season that he missed the playoffs as the head coach of a NBA team after five seasons straight of making the playoffs with the Chicago Bulls.

It is an obvious statement, but the effectiveness of the seventh overall pick will be huge in helping Minnesota get out of it’s playoff drought, be it the Timberwolves actually take someone with the pick or wheel and deal it for a known commodity already in the association.

The final order for the NBA Draft lottery is the following:

    1. Celtics
    2. Lakers
    3. 76ers
    4. Suns
    5. Kings
    6. Magic
    7. Timberwolves
    8. Knicks
    9. Mavericks
    10. Kings
    11. Hornets
    12. Pistons
    13. Nuggets
    14. Heat

The NBA Draft will be held on June 22 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
