Jose Berrios pitches a gem as Twins split double-header
This is the Jose Berrios we have been looking for. Berrios pitched an absolute gem on Thursday evening to lead the Minnesota Twins to a split of a double-header against the Colorado Rockies. But before Berrios there was game one…
First Game, Rockies 5-1 victory
Ervin Santana has come back to Earth. The cold and Santana did not agree, but the pitches he was throwing agreed with the bats of the first-place Rockies.
Santana did get through seven innings, but allowed five earned runs on six hits in the outing. Santana’s ERA has now reached 2.07 which is a sentiment to how well Santana pitched in his first outings of the 2017 season.
Nolan Arenado started the scoring for the Rockies with a solo shot in the first inning to give the Rockies a 1-0 lead. A trio of RBI singles between the third and fourth innings grew the Rockies lead to five runs. The only offense for the Twins came via a sacrifice fly from Brian Dozier in the fifth inning.
The Twins offense was very non-explosive. Miguel Sano was the only Twins batter to have multiple hits with two. The Twins did have their chances but instead left nine men on base in the contest.
Second Game, Twins 2-0 victory

The second game was another example of a mediocre offensive game for the Twins, but the starting pitching had a much different tune. Jose Berrios pitched an absolute gem in his first Target Field victory.
Berrios pitched 7.2 innings while only giving up two hits and one walk while striking out 11 Rockies. It would’ve been a great game to see completed by Berrios, but a high pitch-count resulted in Berrios needed to be pulled.
Minnesota scored their two runs on two RBI singles. The first run came off of a Max Kepler single in the first and the second run came off of a Robbie Grossman single in the fourth.
Grossman, Kepler and Ehire Adrianza were the Twins with multi-hit nights all notching two hits in game two.
The victory in the second game finished off the interleague series with the Rockies taking the series winning two out of three.
What’s next for the Twins?
The Twins enter the weekend with a 20-17 record and in first place in the American League Central. Kansas City will be in town for a three-game weekend set. Friday night’s game will be at 7:10 Central. Saturday and Sunday both have a 1:10 first pitch from beautiful Target Field.
