Twins are reportedly closing in on a deal for Jaime Garcia
The Minnesota Twins are reportedly close to grabbing some pitching help.
Who would have think that the Minnesota Twins would be in contention as we close in on the closing days of July? Who would have thought the Twins would be buyers at the trade deadline? The rhetorical questions are popping up all around Twins Territory and no matter the disbelief, the Twins are contenders and appear to be buyers.
On Thursday evening, FOX baseball reporter Ken Rosenthal tweeted out that the Twins were closing in on a deal with the Atlanta Braves to get starter Jaime Garcia.
Ironically, if the deal goes through, this would be the second starting pitcher that the Twins would grab from Atlanta this season. New starter Bartolo Colon started the season with the Braves before being cut after a very underwhelming start to the season.
This is Garcia’s first season with the Braves. Garcia was traded this past December to the Braves from the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals were Garcia’s home for his entire career until the trade. Garcia made his MLB debut in 2008.
So far in 2018, Garcia is 3-7 with a 4.77 ERA and a 1.330 WHIP. Garcia has started in all 17 games in which he has appeared and has pitched a total of 106 innings so far. Garcia has given up 101 hits and 40 walks while striking out 81.

If the Twins want to seriously contend, they desperately need pitching. The starting rotation is not good and ‘not good’ is probably a vast understatement. Beyond Ervin Santana and Jose Berrios, maybe, Adalberto Mejia is the only other pitcher that has more than one start that is worthy on being in an MLB rotation. Garcia would great help out the rotation woes.
Nothing is official yet, but this seems like a deal that would be good for the Twins. Especially if Rosenthal’s report is correct that it is only for one minor leaguer. A deal for an MLB starting pitcher for a minor leaguer would be an absolute steal that the Twins should partake in.
