Golden Gopher Women’s basketball faces UW-Green Bay in NCAA
By Tyler Haag
The U of M women’s basketball team continues their impressive run this winter with a bid to the NCAA tournament.
The University of Minnesota Women’s basketball team is headed to Eugene, Oregon to take on Wisconsin-Green Bay in their first round matchup in the NCAA tournament. The Gophers are the #10 seed and received an at large bid, while Wisconsin-Green Bay, the #7 seed, won the Horizon League tournament and were awarded an automatic bid. The Gophers and Phoenix will tip off at 4pm Central on Friday, March 16th. The 23-8 Gophers are playing in the tournament for the first time in three seasons and seem to be playing some of their best basketball late in the season. A good showing in the conference tournament and big wins late in the year against ranked opponents helped propel this team into the tournament.
In addition to being selected to the tournament, the Gophers also posted a very cool selection show celebration video you can see here. A short, but fun video including but not limited to selfies, cheering and colored smoke-shooting party devices.
The Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix finished the season 29-3 and are currently ranked 22nd in the Associated Press. Lead in scoring by Jessica Lindstrom, the Phoenix dominate the Horizon League and won the conference tournament again this year, their 16th in the past 24 seasons. This will be their 18th NCAA tournament appearance and they will give the Gophers everything they can handle this Friday in Oregon.
