The Carolina Panthers have signed another former Viking, will they be able to improve on the play we saw in Minnesota? They had better hope so.

Jeremiah Sirles is latest former Viking to sign with the Carolina Panthers. Sirles signed a one year deal with the Panthers on Friday and joins Matt Kalil, Captain Munnerlyn and Scott and Norv Turner in Carolina, reunited after spending time together in Minnesota.

Will Norv Turner’s Air Coryell offensive philosophy be more successful with these players the second time around? In 2014, Turner’s first season in Minnesota, the Vikings gave up 51 sacks which ranked them 28th in the NFL. In 2015 they gave up 45 sacks for 25th in the NFL. Injuries can be blamed for awful line play in 2016 but there is something to be said for adjusting ones game plan based on the personnel available to you and Turner did not seem able to adjust.

Perhaps a gifted athlete such as Cam Newton can cover up inefficiencies in the protection but Turner’s offenses are at their best when he has a bell-cow type running back to lead the charge. Emmitt Smith, LaDainian Tomlinson and Adrian Peterson fit a certain mold of NFL running back, the old mold.

Christian McCaffery is the personification of the new age running back. You can hand him the ball, he can catch the ball out of the backfield, you can line him up as a wide receiver, the number of possible mismatches that he can create is a weapon for this team. Will Norv Turner be able to break from his mold and use this team’s weapons to his advantage?
