Twins claim Vargas off waivers, remind us they are doing things differently
By Tyler Haag
The Minnesota Twins claimed Kennys Vargas off waivers from the Reds and in doing so, remind all of us that there is a new group running things in Twins front office.
Just two days after placing him on waivers, the Minnesota Twins have claimed Kennys Vargas off waivers from the Reds. Vargas has basically been the odd man out in the Twins first base/DH group, after Logan Morrison signed earlier this spring.
A power hitter who has so far in his MLB career has averaged just 8.8 HR per season, the Twins have been waiting for Vargas to click in the majors, but it just hasn’t happened yet. Patience could prove to be just what the doctor ordered but at what point do the Twins have to cut bait?
After losing Polanco for 80 games due to suspension, a roster spot has opened up and although the Twins are obviously very close to severing ties with Vargas, it appears they are willing to give him another chance. Hopefully he can turn things around in the minors and become a productive bat at some point in the future for the Twins. The fact that they brought him back tells us that the front office thinks pretty highly of Vargas talents and are willing to give him more time.
Next: Polanco suspended 80 games
It’s easy to make comparisons to David Ortiz, another first base/DH slugger the Twins let go because he just couldn’t figure it out in the bigs. Vargas will not be Ortiz but the Twins should be applauded for bringing him back if they think there is still a chance he could be a productive major league bat. Because of the way the previous regime handled their prospects, its hard to imagine a scenario in which they would have reacquired a player they placed on waivers less than a week earlier.
