Minnesota Timberwolves: Tyus Jones just misses double-double in preseason loss

It was supposed to be the Andrew Wiggins show on Saturday night when the Minnesota Timberwolves traveled to Winnipeg to take on the Chicago Bulls in preseason action, but it was the other young guys, specifically Minnesota’s own Tyus Jones, that was the talk of the Timberwolves.

The Wolves lost 114-105 to the Chicago Bulls and should’ve-been-Wolves-head-coach Fred Hoiberg with the Bulls bench also doing heavy damage. E’Twaun Moore lead Chicago with 18 points with Doug McDermott right behind with 16.

For Minnesota, only one starter scored in double-digits on Saturday and that was Karl-Anthony Towns who notched 13 points in 23 minutes. The Wolves had four others though score in double-digits off the bench: Nemanja Bjelica, Shabazz Muhammad, Gorgui Dieng and Tyus.

Jones was relegated to the bench after starting in the preseason opener against Oklahoma City. In that game Tyus’ only stat stuffing on the box score was four assists. Tyus had a nice comeback on Saturday with 18 points, which lead the Wolves, and nine assists.

Jones just missed notching a points/assists double-double which has been a rarity for the Wolves of late. The only player to achieve a points/assists double-double in preseason for the Wolves in the past 15 years was Randy Foye who accomplished the feat in 2008.

Lorenzo Brown started the game at point for the Wolves with Rubio working out in Minnesota with the team in Canada. Brown had eight points in 22 minute of play. Fellow point guard Andre Miller did not play in the game.

Kevin Garnett did play and if he keeps this up he might play in more preseason games this season than he did regular season games after returning to the Wolves last season. Garnett had two points in 11 minutes of play.

The Wolves next preseason game is on Monday against the Toronto Raptors in Toronto. Tip off is set for 6:30.
