#5: Matt Asiata

With Adrian Peterson and Jerick McKinnon out of the picture, the entirety of the Vikings rushing attack was placed on Matt Asiata’s shoulders. He did a great job carrying the load.

While not likely to get loose for long touchdowns, he was almost never tackled for negative yardage. In 164 rushing attempts, the most of his career by far, he was only tackled in the backfield 8 times. He scored 9 touchdowns. That means that he was more likely to score a touchdown when handed the ball than be tackled for a loss.

He also caught a 41-yard touchdown from Matt Cassel against the New England Patriots in week two.

Shortly after the season finale, Sid Hartman asked the bruiser if he thinks he can take over the starting role next year if Adrian Peterson doesn’t return. He answered with confidence.

“Think I can do it? Yes. No doubt in my mind. The more experience I got, the better it is for the future. It is what it is. See what the coaches like, and we’ll move forward.”

I don’t think Asiata is the answer for the Vikings at running back, but he has his place and would be a valuable red zone asset to any team. For being thrust into the starting role, he did an excellent job in keeping the ship afloat.

GAME OF THE YEAR: In a week 9 contest against the Redskins, Asiata found the end zone 3 times. Though he only had 10 carries for 26 yards, he made the most of them. He also caught 4 passes for 31 yards.
