Minnesota Vikings: Adrian Peterson is right, there are too many preseason games

Adrian Peterson and Aaron Rodgers have something in common. They are both right. Now it doesn’t shock me about Rodgers, he won his episode of Celebrity Jeopardy! that aired on Tuesday, but when Peterson makes a good point, well, it’s time to listen. Both players believe that the NFL’s preseason is just too long.

They are both exactly correct.

Rodgers commented on the preseason saying it was a joke after Jordy Nelson, one of his top receiving threats with the Green Bay Packers, torn his ACL this past weekend during preseason play. Peterson commented on it after practice on Tuesday, a couple weeks removed from teammate Phil Loadholt going out for the year with a torn Achilles.

Peterson was asked if changes should be made to the preseason. Here is his statement from Andrew Krammer of 1500ESPN:

"“I do feel that way. I feel like, adding on an extra game as well … That’s a lot of wear and tear on the body and then you go into a 16-game season. It’s rough. I think it’s something to sit back and think about. It’s not basketball, this is football. Guys are getting chopped below their knees, guys running and colliding going 100 miles per hour. It’s a high level for risk and major injuries. You look at the numbers and it shows that. I think it’s something they need to take into consideration, maybe turn it into three games in the preseason or something.”"

Seriously, Peterson makes good points. Basketball, for example, can be played at a lesser level and still be somewhat beneficial. You can work on things at half-speed and it’ll work. Sure, it’s not a great product, but that’s preseason basketball.

Football doesn’t work at half-speed. Half-speed football is the Pro Bowl. The Pro Bowl is worthless and not even football.

Less games are the way to go, but that won’t be an easy battle. Owners love preseason games. It’s another two gates and two games worth of beer, merchandise, yadda yadda yadda… Owners kind of suck. Sometimes they don’t even spend any of their own money on their own stadium.

NFL fans alike need to ban together and not go to these games. It’s the only way that less will be played and we won’t lose major players in meaningless games. Boycott the preseason, write your congressman, protest during the State Fair, apparently you can do that now, whatever you need to do.

Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings fans don’t agree on much, but we need less preseason football. It make sense to everyone who isn’t sitting back and lining their pockets.
