Minnesota Gophers: U of M to take time on new AD hire

The University of Minnesota is going to make sure that they hire the right athletic director. The Minneapolis Star Tribune is reporting that the U is going to take their time in the hiring process and that the new AD won’t be on the job until the spring at the earliest. That means that interim Beth Goetz will be on the job through the very important football and basketball seasons.

According to the chair of the Board of Regents Dean Johnson, there hasn’t been much discussion yet on finding Norwood Teague’s full-time successor.

“As far as a new athletic director, hardly any discussion has been held. I’ve hardly talked to the president and board members about it. We’re in the ‘cleaning the porch’ mode right now.”

In their defense, the porch needs a lot of cleaning. A professional cleaning crew like cleaning.

The Star Tribune is also reporting that the investigation into Norwood Teague is going to take 60 to 90 days and it looks like the University will wait until that investigation has concluded before going full bore into finding a new leader for the athletics department.

A new AD with Minnesota ties looks to be the way that a lot of donors want the selection to go. University President Eric Kaler said in an interview with WCCO radio that that won’t be the deciding factor.

Names thrown out so far in the AD search are Goetz, Minnesota Gophers baseball coach John Anderson and senior associate athletic director Dan O’Brien.

No matter who gets the job, they probably won’t be named anytime soon.
