Minnesota Vikings: Six observations from the Vikings opening loss
September 14, 2015; Santa Clara, CA, USA; Minnesota Vikings kicker Blair Walsh (3) kicks a field goal out of the hold by punter Jeff Locke (18) during the fourth quarter against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi
Blair… son of a witch
How long is long enough? That might be the question that the Vikings brass is currently trying to figure out when it comes to their kicker Blair Walsh. After a horrible preseason, Walsh went one for two in field goal attempts on Monday night.
The miss came in the first quarter from 44-yards out. Sure it was a windy night, but you have one job as a kicker and that is to get the ball between the uprights. That’s the only job. Sure, circumstances might make it tougher, but you need to be able to convert when you are called on whenever the kick is within 45 yards or so.
What didn’t make matters better was the field goal that Walsh did actually make. In the opening seconds on the fourth quarter, Walsh converted on a 37-yard field goal, but barely. The kick just squeaked by the right upright and despite being good, didn’t really allow anyone to feel any more confident about Walsh.
