Minnesota Golden Gophers barely beat Kent State, in a sad offensive state

I guess you should never assume anything in sports, but the assumption that the Minnesota Golden Gophers would roll over Kent State was not a good assumption at all. The Golden Gophers were victorious, 10-7, but if you read that score again you’ll see what the issue is.

The Gophers defense was stellar once again. The Golden Gopher defense only allowed Kent State to cross the 50-yard-line during the course of the game. The defense didn’t give up any points. Kent State’s points came off a fumble recovery that they ran back 80 yards to get their only points in the game.

Coming into the game, Kent State had only scored six points in their last six games against Big Ten opponents. They more than doubled that in one play.

The offense for the Gophers was anything but golden on Saturday. It’s never good when there are a whole lot more questions than answers after a win, but that’s where Minnesota is right now.

Mitch Leidner did not have an impressive game. 17/27, 184 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions highlighted the day for Leidner. The proof in the pudding is that the Gophers did not let the press talk to Leidner after the game.

KJ Maye caught the one Gophers TD on a 14 yard pass from Leidner in the second quarter.

Head Coach Jerry Kill was not exactly happy in the postgame press conference, which is not a huge shock when looking at how futile his offense was. Kill did provide a great quote:

Kill is not getting fired, especially after the University gave him, seemingly, a 105 contract extensions. It’s to the point though that Kill does need to give very serious consideration to a switch at QB.

The kind of performance the Gophers gave on Saturday will not cut it against anybody in the Big Ten.
