Minnesota Vikings: Time to bring in competition for Blair Walsh
The time has come. I’ve tried to keep faith in Blair Walsh, but the Minnesota Vikings have waited for four weeks and Walsh is still missing field goals. The time has come to bring in some competition for Walsh.
If you count the preseason, Walsh has now missed a kick in six of his last seven games. The guy couldn’t miss his rookie season and now he is missing in more games than not. That’s unacceptable in the NFL.
Walsh’s missed kick on Sunday might’ve cost the Vikings the game. Minnesota lost the game by three, so on the surface it sure looks like an obvious game loser, but if Walsh makes that kick it changes the whole flow of the game. So it’s easy to say that Walsh’s missed kick changed the game as a whole.
I’m not calling for the outright release of Walsh, but a little pressure on the kicker would be good. I still believe in Walsh and that he can rebound back into being one of the best kickers in the league. That being said pressure never hurt anybody.

It’s a win-win situation for the Vikings by bringing someone in. If that someone pushes Walsh to be a better kicker and finally get him right, well, that’s fantastic and the Vikings have their kicker for the foreseeable future. If Walsh wilts in the face of pressure, he’s not your kicker and it’s officially time to move on. It’s better to find that out sooner or later.
Walsh might’ve just missed a field goal that cost the Vikings a win. Wins are hard to come by in the NFL. That one game could be the difference between the Vikings being in or out of the playoffs in a couple months. Walsh can’t be consistently missing later in the season.
I believe in Walsh, but I also believe that the Vikings need a consistent kicker and that consistency needs to be found sooner than later.
