Minnesota Timberwolves: Kevin Garnett becomes NBA all-time leading defensive rebounder

In the Minnesota Timberwolves’ loss to the Denver Nuggets on Friday night, Kevin Garnett became the NBA’s all-time leader in defensive rebounds.

Despite what was a pretty gloomy night after the Nuggets came from behind and stole a victory from the Timberwolves on Friday, some cool history was made. And, unsurprisingly, it was the franchise icon of the Timberwolves who made said history.

In the first quarter of the contest on Friday, Garnett recorded his 11,407th career defensive rebound. With that rebound, he passed former Utah Jazz perennial all-star and future hall of famer Karl Malone for tops all-time in NBA history.

Garnett finished the game with four defensive rebounds, putting his career total at 11,409.

More from Minnesota Timberwolves

Garnett currently ranks ninth in NBA history in total rebounds, including both offensive and defensive rebounds, at 14,612 for his career. The only active player he’s trailing in that department is Tim Duncan, who has 14,828.

Defensive rebounds have been kept as a statistic since the 1973-74 NBA season.

Many NBA experts and fans alike have deemed Garnett as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, rebounder of all time. Claiming the top spot in total defensive rebounds is only more ammo for those individuals to use in arguments.
