Minnesota Timberwolves: Trust John Calipari?
With the NBA Draft less than two weeks away, should the Minnesota Timberwolves trust John Calipari and his record of players who have come from his camp and had NBA success?
The NBA Draft is less than two weeks away and the Minnesota Timberwolves and their new staff are doing their due diligence to know all the prospects throughout the draft. They are still having pre-draft workouts and visiting the sporting rep agencies pro days.
With the fifth pick being the only pick that the Timberwolves have some would wonder why they are having workouts with prospects who are projected to go in the later part of the first round or even the second round. The Timberwolves front office is doing their due diligence to make sure that they know who all the prospects are in the opportunity that a trade comes through and they can acquire another later round pick.
With the recent success of Kentucky draft picks and prospects who have been coached by John Calipari, should the Timberwolves make it two years in a row that they select a Kentucky Wildcat? The team’s biggest need this offseason is outside shooting and there is a hole at backup shooting guard, which Kentucky Wildcat Jamal Murray could easily fill if he is still on the board.

John Calipari has had a knack for getting some great talent through recruiting and those players ending up to be great NBA players. Karl-Anthony Towns is the latest example of that success and mentioned at his Rookie of the Year press conference that being at Kentucky with Calipari helped him prepare to be a professional.
Jamal Murray is the newest top prospect out of Kentucky and Calipari mentioned last week that he thinks he should be the number one pick in this year’s draft. Some will chalk that up to him supporting his own, but no one can say this kid does not have amazing talent.
The Timberwolves glaring hole is outside shooting. Having a point guard in Rubio who has no threat of an outside shot makes opposing defenses be able to lay off the perimeter and clog the paint where Towns is playing. They desperately need a shooter to space the floor.
The Timberwolves had a workout today at Mayo Square with Jamal Murray and saw Buddy Hield in California last week although he still may have a workout scheduled for this upcoming week. As we mentioned last week, Tom Thibodeau has mentioned the team’s need for more shooting.
