With the NBA Draft’s fifth pick of the first round, the Minnesota Timberwolves select Providence point guard Kris Dunn.

After an offseason that has garnered many rumors, the Minnesota Timberwolves end up selecting Kris Dunn, the point guard out of Providence, with the fifth pick of the first round.

There have been many rumors throughout this time. The new front office of Thibodeau and Layden did a nice job at keeping their lips tight in the draft process while having workouts with so many prospects they put themselves in a position to be ready in any draft scenario.

With talks of a proposed trade for many people like Jimmy Butler, Kenneth Faried, Nerlens Noel, or ultimately trading back, the Timberwolves end up keeping their pick and selecting Kris Dunn.

  • Dunn is the two-time Big East Player of the Year and Big East Defensive Player of the Year. He has tremendous defensive upside and driving ability. He should be a great pick for the Timberwolves, fitting the type of point guards that Thibodeau loves. The Timberwolves elect to not focus on their biggest need for outside shooting, bypassing Buddy Hield and Jamal Murray. They go for upside on the defensive side of the ball with Dunn. Dunn not being known as a shooter will have to work on that part of his game to improve.

With Dunn being selected, the future of Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio looks very dim. With rumors earlier today and throughout last season around the trade deadline, Rubio could end up being traded to another franchise. This being the first move by the new Timberwolves front office, this is certainly telling of what they think of their current point guard situation.

The Minnesota Timberwolves end up getting the player they had at the top of their draft board and the player they have coveted all along. Kris Dunn will be a nice addition to the young Timberwolves squad, giving them yet another nice piece to build for the future.
