Vikings wide receiver Michael Floyd set to make an impact
By Travis Young
Former Cretin-Derham Hall and Notre Dame standout Michael Floyd has a real opportunity in his home state.
Michael Floyd‘s physical talents and elite production at both the high school and collegiate levels lead many to believe that Floyd was destined for a Pro Bowl caliber NFL career. When he was selected in the first round by Arizona, he was expected to be the perfect complimentary piece to the venerable Larry Fitzgerald.
Over his first fours seasons in Arizona, Floyd averaged over 50 receptions, more than 15 yards a catch and nearly six touchdowns. These are stellar numbers for a young and developing flanker.
I was excited and optimistic when the Minnesota Vikings signed the mercurial Floyd in May to a minimal and non guaranteed contract. However, most other Vikings’ fans and media pundits were not thrilled with the acquisition. But, coming off a down year in Arizona and with recent legal troubles, it is easy to understand the ‘show me’ mentality of his detractors.
As expected, the NFL quickly handed down a four game suspension due to Floyd’s impaired driving conviction.

On the first day of training camp, comments from Head Coach Mike Zimmer indicated through the Pioneer Press that Floyd will be busy in the preseason. He can then stay sharp through his suspension in anticipation of playing in October .
"“The good thing with the suspension is he can be in the meetings but just can’t be at practice or anything like that. He should be on top of things. “"
I am optimistic Floyd will be a productive spark to the Vikings and its receiving core this season. Floyd’s physicality, deceiving speed and route running ability will greatly help the group. Remember, he is now near his family again on a regular basis. He is also in the same locker room as college teammates and close friends Harrison Smith and Kyle Rudolph. All of these respective factors should allow us to see the best of Michael Floyd in our very own purple and gold.
