Sports Illustrated no longer projects the Minnesota Gophers football team as a bowl team.

Football is officially back. We’ve had a full week of college football now and we learned a lot of things across the country. The Texas Longhorns aren’t back just yet, Penn State is for real and the Minnesota Gophers football team is not-that-good. That last one we are going to put a big ol’ ‘apparently’ on.

Going into the first week of the college football season, our friends at Sports Illustrated had the Golden Gophers heading to the Heart of Texas Bowl on December 26 against the University of Texas at San Antonio. This week, well, not so much.

After a win over the Buffalo Bulls, SI no longer has the Gophers making the Heart of Texas Bowl. Sports Illustrated has the Gophers in no bowl game whatsoever.

That means that SI has the Gophers now winning less than six games this season. The Gophers might have shown us that they are not as good as we potentially thought and maybe the Big Ten as a whole is going to be really good, but  I still don’t think Minnesota will be shutout when it comes to a bowl game.

The Heart of Texas Bowl, not that that is the bowl the Gophers should be aiming for, is now projected by SI to be a matchup between Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech.  No Big Ten teams are projected at the moment to be in the College Football Playoff, but both Michigan and Ohio State are projected to play New Year’s Day in the Fiesta Bowl and Orange Bowl, respectively.

The Gophers will play next on Saturday night in Oregon, maybe. Due to wildfire smoke, the Gophers tilt against Oregon State might be moved time wise, so stay tuned for those updates. Right now the game is set for a 9:00 Central kickoff and scheduled for the air on Fox Sports 1.
