Minnesota Golden Gophers: Amir Coffeey picks Minnesota

He’s one of us and he’s staying at home. The one thing that Minnesota Golden Gophers basketball fans seem to demand every season has been accomplished by head coach Richard Pitino. Amir Coffey had announced he plans to attend the University of Minnesota next fall.

Coffey’s father is well-known in these parts. Richard Coffey played for the Golden Gophers and for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA.

The younger Coffey is 6-7 and currently plays a guard at Hopkins High School. Coffey has big size for the guard position and there is no reason that he shouldn’t be making a major impact on the Gophers right away in the 2016 season.

Coffey announced his decision during a press conference on Monday. According to the Star Tribune, Coffey had a visit scheduled to visit the Texas Longhorns this upcoming weekend, but that was reportedly canceled last week.

We need to share this bit from Amelia Rayno’s story from the Star Tribune to accurately show how excited the Gophers’ coaching staff is that Coffey picked them:

"“Amir Coffey said Pitino was excited when he told him the news, and that assistant coach Ben Johnson started screaming in the background.”"

Rayno points out that Coffey sustained an ACL injury last season that kept him from completing his junior season at Hopkins. He has been deciding between some big name schools of Arizona, Baylor, Texas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Penn State, Michigan State and Indiana.

Coffey is a nationally ranked recruit and the most desired guy in the state of Minnesota.
