Minnesota Lynx win WNBA Finals, third championship in five years
Three in five years that’s what the Minnesota Lynx accomplished on Wednesday night. The Lynx won the WNBA Finals in a pretty convincing fashion over the Indiana Fever in a winner takes it all Game Five, 69-52. The amazing thing is the Lynx won the game with getting little help from the Maya Moore, the greatest player in the WNBA, and from Lindsay Whalen, one of the greatest point guards in league history.
Whalen has been hurt all postseason long and she fell down and got up gingerly early in the first quarter and never looked quite on after. Moore just had an off night from the floor. Moore hit only one shot from the field and two free throws. Moore only had five points and Whalen only put in two.
The rest of the Lynx starters completely stepped it up, though. The spotlight was on center Sylvia Fowles who scored a game high 20 points and notched a double-double with 11 rebounds. Fowles was named the WNBA Finals MVP. Rebekkah Brunson scored 10 and grabbed 14 boards. Seimone Augustus looked like a retro Augustus putting up 16 points.
The first half was not a pretty half of basketball. At one point the teams had combined for more turnovers than they had made field goals.
Field goals were especially hard to come by for the Fever. In the second quarter, the Fever made one field goal. One. Tamika Catchings had layup and hit two free throws for the serious total of only four points in the second frame.

The good news for the Fever is that they doubled that output in the third quarter, but that still means they only scored eight points in the frame. The Fever had the highest scoring quarter in their fourth with 23, but the Lynx scored the same amount in the second quarter as the Fever did in the second and third combined.
It was the first Game Five for the Lynx in their run of four WNBA Finals appearances in five seasons and it turned out pretty good for the Lynx. It’ll be the last time the Lynx play in Target Center for a while too. With the Target Center renovation project set for next summer, the Lynx will have to find a new home for a season.
Winning a WNBA title is nice, but the best part for the Lynx might be something going down in Chanhassen. Reportedly, Prince was having a party for the Lynx after the won the championship at Paisley Park. Yes, Prince was in attendance at the game… no word on his party yet.
