Some impressed and some distressed

Remember Blair Walsh? Yeah, when his memory is brought up during a game, that’s probably not a good sign for the current Vikings kicker and that kicker currently is Kai Forbath. Forbath missed three PATs last season and he missed one in Monday night.

More from Sporting Sota

You can’t miss PATs, they are free points, virtually. Sure, misses will happen, but four in the course of less than a season is a red flag for a team that hasn’t had a good roll with kickers over the past couple of years. Forbath also barely snuck in one of his field goals, so I’d venture that Forbath won’t have a long rope for the next few weeks.

On the other side of the special teams kicking duo, Ryan Quigley looked fantastic in his punting debut for the Vikings. Simply, Quigley pulled off punts that looked better in one game than Jeff Locke had in whole career with the Vikings. Quigley is a guy that Vikings fans don’t want to see, but they should feel okay with having the punting duties squarely on Quigley’s foot.

One other thing we learned on special teams is that Jerick McKinnon will be just fine as the team’s kick returner. McKinnon is going to take one or two to the house this season. The talent is there.

The special teams will try to kick their way to victory again on Sunday afternoon when the Vikings take on the Pittsburgh Steelers. The game is set for noon central from Pennsylvania and it will be shown on FOX.
